I don’t believe in religion because it can be a rationalization for absolutely anything. If God tells you that it’s necessary to go out and kill people to achieve a particular goal, then the religious person has to do it. They have to obey God. They have no choice. This kind of thinking can be used to rationalize killing innocent children, beheading people, or any other goal that the religious person might have, such as starting a state in which their religious group, and only their religious group, controls the government. Killing innocent people is never justified, yet religious people of all stripes have no problem justifying killing when they feel that has to be done as a means to an end.

The other reason that I don’t like religion is because it’s just another way of putting labels on people. I hate labels. All labels do is give people an easy way to decide whether or not they like you. Is she in my group, or not? Labels give people an easy way for people to determine whether or not they should like you. It kind of goes like this. Well, if he is in my group, then I will like him. That’s not the way to live life. That’s not a good way to judge people just based on what group they belong to, but that’s absolutely people’s favorite way of making judgments about people. I’m a member of so many different groups, and all the time, even before I open my mouth, people have already made 1000 judgments about me just based on the way I look to them. That’s one reason why I dislike religion so much because it just seems to me to be another way to turn the world into us versus them, and that is the path to destroying the world, and not making it better.

I think from now on when anyone asks me my religion, I’m going to say the following. I want to be good. I want to be kind. I want to treat other people with respect, and make the world a better place. I wish people would realize that the most important thing in life is to love one another, and to realize that in every way that is important and meaningful, we are really just like our fellow human being. All those other things that seem to us to make so much difference really don’t make any difference at all. We all live on the same planet, and we all breathe the same air, and we all need to love, and be loved by someone. That’s it. That’s all there is. Nothing else really matters.
