Last Monday, at a park in Istanbul, 40 or 50 demonstrators held a sit-in because because they didn’t want the government to turn a park into a shopping mall. The government responded by sending in riot police, water cannons, and teargas. This crackdown on demonstrators set off demonstrations, and similar responses from the government in cities all throughout Turkey. Now the protesters calling for the Prime Minister to resign, and the violence is escalating. The Prime Minister was democratically elected, but more and more he has been taking away people’s rights, and not listening to them.
