I hate cellphones
Or mobile phones
As the British call them

Once upon a time
We could wait
Minutes or even hours

Suddenly
People have so many important things
To convey to each other
And they can’t wait one more second

Once we had patience
Once we had absence
Once we had longing
Now we carry our friends in our pockets

Once we had private conversations
Now the world is our or living room
And we broadcast our business
To the nearest passing stranger

In the southern United States
Once people were neighborly with strangers
Now most folks just talk to their cellphones
